Irena Sendler

Irena Sendler (née Krzyżanowska) born Otwock, Poland February 15, 1910 (d. 2008). Catholic humanitarian social worker whose efforts helped save 2,500 Jewish children. Arrested in 1943, tortured and sentenced to death, but escaped. Honored by Yad Vashem as member of Polish Righteous Among the Nations, 1965.
